The Danish newspaper Kommunen is published bi-weekly in tabloid format. Kommunen’s readers can be found among decision makers in the Danish society, mainly in the local municipalities (mayors, council members, chief executives, etc).
The newspaper was founded by the Copenhagen daily Information in 1958 and has a circulation of 3600 copies.
In 2009, Kommunen was bought by a newly formed company, owned by the two successful Danish news websites Altinget.dk and dknyt. With a strategy of strengthening the newspaper’s position and increasing circulation, they hired more editorial staff and asked Ribergaard & Munk to create a new design which could meet the high editorial ambitions.

Every issue will include two pages where the newspaper will zoom in on one particular local municipality, its development, current situation, and problems.
In the new design, Christian Schwartz’ typeface Guardian Egyptian (for the first time in Denmark) has been combined with Corpid, a versatile sans serif designed by Lucas de Groot.

A simple six-column grid forms the structure of the new paper and the colour palette consists of five colours.
